Are you taking dance lessons for your reception?

Platinum Bride asked:

We just began dance lessons last night for our wedding reception. We have 3 songs that fade into one another that we are going to dance to as our first dance. After meeting with our private dance instructor last night, we found that we will have to learn Rumba, East Coast Swing, and West Coast Swing dances. I am nervous about it, because our wedding is in January. It’s also making me think about getting a dress made to wear while doing our first dance, because my wedding gown I think would be just too large to dance comfortably in. Has anyone else on YA taken dance lessons for their wedding, and if so, how did it go for you? What songs did you do? We are doing “In Your Eyes” by Peter Gabriel, “Two Tickets to Paradise” by Eddie Money, and “Can’t Get Enough of Your Love, Babe” by Barry White. We think it will be a fun surprise to our guests to see us dance to these songs, and they tell a story of our relationship. Tell me about your experience.

We are planning on it. We have a while to go still, but I have no rythem at all. It is not fun to look at. hahah. My husband says I am like Kim K on dancing with the stars, all the curves but no idea how to use them, ahahah.

Yes, you can learn to dance before January, but you will HAVE to practice. You can’t just take 4-5 lessons and be done with it. I’ve taken dance lessons before (not for the wedding, but in general), and it requires a lot of practice to become confident and feel good about doing it while all eyes are on you. Try and see how it goes - you can always just do a traditional “dummy” first dance where you just hug each other and sway back and forth on the dance floor.

How comfortable you would be in your dress depends on the style of dress and on what you’re comfortable wearing in general. Put the dress on and twirl around a bit. Are you comfortable? It’s something you will have to decide for yourself. You can always change into something else for the reception.

We were planning to waltz and had one lesson. My husband put his foot down because he felt so uncomfortable - so we ended up doing a shuffle to Brown Eyed Girl. It was wonderful.
